About Sam Sand Dunes
Located 42 km west of Jaisalmer on the edge of the Thar Desert, Sam Sand Dunes are Rajasthan's most accessible and dramatic sand dunes. They stretch endlessly towards Pakistan, rising up to 30 metres. Sunset camel safaris, desert camps with folk music, and a sky blazing with stars make Sam an essential Rajasthan experience.
Visitor Tips
- Book a reputable overnight camp in advance — quality varies hugely
- Take a camel to a dune away from the main area for solitude
- Bring a scarf/shawl for the cold desert nights (October–February)
- Don't forget to look at the stars — light pollution is minimal
