About Junagarh Fort
Unlike most Rajasthan forts, Junagarh was built on flat ground rather than a hilltop — and was never conquered in over 500 years. Built by Raja Rai Singh in 1593, it contains 37 palaces and 44 gates, each more ornate than the last. Its museum houses war trophies, royal regalia, paintings, and even an early 20th-century biplane.
Visitor Tips
- Hire an official guide (₹300) — the stories behind each hall are extraordinary
- The biplane in the museum is a unique and unexpected exhibit
- Anup Mahal's red-lacquer and gold-inlay decoration is breathtaking
